Why I Started A Blog In 2025
The short version: Because God told me to.
The long version: Because nothing quite sets my heart on fire like seeing a woman fall in love with her beautiful God-given curls.
How It Started
You see, I used to hate my hair. It was dry, brittle, and damaged from years of relaxers. I grew up during the creamy crack era, and my mom, who had her hands full with four sets of hair to do, decided to relax my hair. I actually don’t remember when I got my first relaxer due to being so young. And listen, I don’t blame her. There were hardly any products or resources around to help women of color embrace their curls. I probably would’ve done the same thing.
Fast forward to college, I was a busy collegiate athlete who still didn’t have a clue what to do with my hair. My go-to hairstyle was a bun. That seemingly user-friendly style began to break off the hair in the center of my head. I spent four years doing damage control to try and mitigate the irreversible damage that had been done. Two major haircuts later and a relaxer that wouldn’t take to my hair anymore, I was done.
So, in 2014, I took to YouTube University and spent every day after classes and practice learning about natural hair. When I saw what natural hair truly looked like, I was obsessed and knew that I wanted my curls back. After a year of neglecting study hall to learn about natural hair and growing out said hair, I happily waved goodbye to my relaxed ends and hello to my fro on December 24, 2015.
Y’all, I didn’t know how to act! I was washing my hair every day. Did a lot of wash days featuring DIY concoctions and a WHOLE lot of trial and error-ing. LOL
Oh and professional sheers? Nah. Give me the office scissors and call my big sis to get the pieces in the back!
And while I wouldn’t trade that season for the world, I know that I couldn’t enroll in full-time class schedule at YouTube Uni or do all of the trial and error days with the way my work and life schedule is set up.
How It’s Going
Today, I’m 10 years into this natural hair game and couldn’t be happier! Going natural was one of the best decisions I’ve made to date. Not only is my hair healthy and thriving, but I know that when I look in the mirror, I get to admire God’s handiwork. He took his time on each individual curl, and he even has an updated curl count on my hair! Matthew 10:30
Now, please hear me when I say I am still learning more about my curls every day. In fact, I had a TON of unlearning to do due to my years of learning from natural hair women who were doing the best they could with the information they received themselves. I spent years overcomplicating my washdays, and I honestly wish I had someone to simply walk me through a simple and realistic regimen for my curls.
But don’t fret, curliepop! That’s exactly what I intend to do for you.
I’ve got two goals. One: glorify God in all I do. Two: Encourage, inspire, and equip women who don’t believe that they can grow and/or care for their beautiful God-given curls with the tools to do just that. God didn’t just take his time on my curls. He did the same for every unique strand that stands or cascades down your beautiful hair, too.
